Why Moms Need Strength Training: It's About More Than Just Fitness

If you've ever felt like you lost yourself a little after becoming a mom, you aren't alone. It’s one of the most common—and most unspoken—realities of motherhood.

I know because it happened to me...
After I had my son, I was so focused on making sure everyone else's needs were met that I completely forgot to make sure mine were too. The mom guilt was real. Every time I tried to do something for myself—whether it was take a quick shower, sneak in a short workout, or even go to the grocery store by myself—he just wasn’t having it. And after enough meltdowns, I was too, so I just kind of stopped trying.
More stress. More anxiety. More of that “lost” feeling.
Eventually, it all caught up to me and I broke down. And what helped me come back to myself? What helped me feel strong again?...
Strength training!
Not just because it got me physically strong, but because it gave me a sense of mental strength too. It was something that I did for just me, and yet it impacted every single part of my life and my family’s life for the better.
Why Strength Training Matters So Much for Moms
Strength training is often marketed as a way to "tone up" (which is just another way of saying "gain lean muscle") or change how you look—but for moms, it’s sooo much more than that.
Here’s what lifting weights can really do for you:
1. It supports your daily function. Carrying kids, groceries, car seats, diaper bags—these tasks demand real strength. Training your muscles to be strong helps you do these things with less strain (and less risk of injury).
2. It protects your bones and joints. As we age—especially after pregnancy—bone density and joint health become even more important. Strength training helps preserve (and even build) bone density and strengthens the muscles around your joints to keep them healthy and mobile.
3. It boosts your energy and mood. Yep. It might sound counterintuitive but working out actually gives you more energy. And it releases those feel-good endorphins we all need—especially on the days when sleep is lacking and stress is high.
4. It rebuilds your confidence. There’s something powerful about feeling physically strong, especially after all the changes your body goes through during pregnancy and postpartum. Strength training is a tangible reminder that your body is, and always was, capable, resilient, and worthy of care.

Strength Isn't Just Physical—It's Emotional Too
Strength training helped me reclaim parts of myself I thought I lost in motherhood. It gave me an outlet. A routine. A goal that wasn’t about anyone else—just about showing up for myself.
And what I realized along the way is this:
Taking care of yourself doesn’t mean you’re putting your family last. It means you’re making sure you have the strength—physically and emotionally—to keep showing up for them and for yourself.
So if you’ve been feeling a little lost lately, please know that I see you. You’re not alone. And if you’ve been waiting for a sign to get started with strength training… girl, this is it.
You’re stronger than you think, Mama. And that strength? It translates into everything.
